Throwback Gear History of the name - University of Lowell The University of Lowell was one of UMass Lowell’s predecessor institutions from 1975 to 1991, before becoming part of the University of Massachusetts system and being renamed UMass Lowell. Many UML alumni are graduates of this former institution.
